Post office RD and TD, in plain words

By SWInfoSystems · Updated 3 November 2026

How recurring and time deposits work, and what to check first.

RD: you deposit a fixed amount every month for a fixed time. TD: you deposit once for a fixed time. Interest rates are revised from time to time. Always check the current India Post rate on the day you open the account, and keep the passbook / receipt safe.

Why it works this way

  • RD builds a habit. TD locks money once.
  • Rates change, so the guide never promises a fixed rate.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming an old rate still applies.
  • Missing a monthly RD deposit without checking the penalty.

Can I open RD and TD online? It depends on the post office and your account type.
